Things aren’t going as Screwtape would like. Poor Wormwood receives the most stinging telling off from his exasperated uncle.

Wormwood has a plan: increase the sexual temptation, and then throw in an attack on another area of the patient’s life. Screwtape approves.

Wormwood has tried and failed to tempt the Patient with sex. Even worse, the Patient now realises that temptations don’t last forever, and he doesn’t have to give in to them.

What is love anyway? Screwtape attempts to explain it – and God’s love for humans – in a way that only a demon can.

Screwtape gives Wormwood the sex talk

Screwtape gives Wormwood a lecture on the virtues of gluttony.

There’s a lull in the war – and, subsequently, a lull in the Patient’s anxiety about it. Screwtape advises Wormwood on using this lapse to their advantage.

The zeal of the Patient’s initial conversion is gone; in its place is a more thoughtful humility. Wormwood’s job just got tougher.

The Patient makes a return to his faith, leaving Wormwood in the doghouse with Screwtape.
