It's twelve months since Dr Rosemarie Mallett was appointed Bishop of Croydon. In this interview with Premier Christianity's Megan Cornwell, Dr Mallett describes her early life growing up in Barbados and subsequent experiences of racism when she moved to the UK at the age of seven. "It was pointed out to me that my colour was a problem, because I was black." With her wider family also experiencing prejudice, Rosemarie became more politically aware and involved in fighting for racial justice. In discussing her Christian faith and decision to become ordained, she also shares her struggle with the Church of England as an institution, due to its history of involvement in colonialism, imperialism, and chattel slavery. Ultimately, she decided to play a role in repairing the breach and contributing to a more just and inclusive church. Speaking ahead of the 75th anniversary of Windrush, Rosemarie also reflects on the resilience and contributions of those who came to the UK with hope and expectation, despite facing racism and marginalisation. She acknowledges that there is still work to be done in addressing the ongoing injustices faced by this generation and their descendants.
