Unmasking Childhood Trauma with Leon Berry

The Gospel Breakfast Show with Belinda was a melting pot of raw emotion and insightful discussion as they welcomed integrative therapist, Leon Berry, to the show. Inspired by the powerful narratives in Kirk Franklin's documentary, "Father's Day", Leon joined Belinda to shed light on the often overlooked subject of childhood trauma, especially in men.

Leon has an impressive repertoire, having worked with diverse clients dealing with issues such as drug abuse, family conflict, infidelity and men's issues. His work extends to various organisations and churches, including our own Pastor Mike White Shirt tab at The Tab London. The conversation revolved around the reactions garnered by the Kirk Franklin documentary. The response was overwhelming, particularly from men who could relate to its content and felt triggered by it. It was evident that a deeper exploration into these challenges was necessary.Leon shared his insights on the documentary. He highlighted two aspects that stood out for him - Kirk's instinct to rescue his father despite his own struggles, and the complex relationship with his mother which he described as a wound that kept reopening.

Leon also discussed potential triggers that men may experience when watching such a documentary. He spoke about the longing for parental love and acceptance and how an unstable home life can impact one’s emotional framework. As a Christian therapist, Leon believes that therapy is gradually becoming more accepted within churches. He cited examples from his own church which openly discusses therapy from the pulpit. This has fostered open conversations among members about therapy. When asked what therapy could help with, Leon astutely compared emotional wounds to physical ones - just because they are invisible doesn't mean they're not there or don't need attention. Finally, Leon introduced 'Emotional Motion Leadership Mentors', a programme designed to help men challenge their self-doubts and limiting beliefs in order to become better versions of themselves. The conversation with Leon Berry was a testament to the healing power of therapy, and the importance of addressing emotional wounds. Whether you're dealing with childhood trauma or other personal challenges, therapy can be a powerful tool on your journey to healing and self-discovery.
