UK Gospel Spotlight: Efua B

Akosua DF: Im thrilled to finally get to chat with you. I absolutely love what you contribute to the gospel scene. So, lets start off with an introduction shall we? Im cognizant that you are relatively new to the UK Gospel scene, so for the benefit of our readers & listeners who may be unfamiliar with your music tell us a bit about yourself.

Efua B: Im a 23-year-old Ghanaian from South London. Ive grown up in church my whole life and started music at a young age. I was a member of our childrens choir and then our youth choir. I began to take song writing and leading worship seriously around the age of fifteen and later started leading in the main adult services. Id often include some of my original material in my worship sets and started to notice that people were engaging with the songs. This was one of the many things that made me realise that making music was not only a gift, but also my calling.

Akosua DF: What a beautiful story and testimony of Gods faithfulness. You released your debut single earlier this year and followed it up with three more singles. The great news is that your debut EP is out today. Its titled As in Heaven . that sounds very prophetic. Can you expound on the message you hope to convey to your listeners through this project?

Efua B: As in Heaven is a recurring theme on Kingdom Come, which is one of the songs on the EP. As in Heaven is more than just a song lyric, its the way of life that the death and resurrection of Christ paid for. Heaven isnt just a place, but a reality that we live from. We now live from dominion and authority as Jesus is living in us, knowing that every one of His promises are meant for us to experience right here and right now. As In Heaven means we live free from condemnation and anything that keeps us bound. Its also the fact that Jesus will never leave or forsake us. These are the concepts that I want people to take away from this EP.

Akosua DF:  Love that. I notice from your previous singles that your style of writing is quite vertical. The current worship music market is flooded with songs which are more horizontal than vertical. As a worship leader, do you feel that modern day christian songwriters need to realign their focus?

Efua B: I think as songwriters we always write from where we are at, from a place of understanding, experience, and the way we relate to God. The way I relate to God has always simplistically put Him and biblical truths at the very centre in an undiluted way, which is reflected in the way I write. I think its always important for God to be the focus when writing Christian songs, and I believe that this is done in many ways and styles of writing. Theres room for it all in the worship music market. People are moved by different aspects of God, and I believe that in the worship music market, its our job to reflect that in the variety of music that is available.

Akosua DF: Ok, my final question is less deep. [Laughs] Which five gospel artists are currently on constant rotation in your personal music playlist?

Efua B: Israel Houghton, Maverick City, UPPERROOM, Deeper Worship and Phil Thompson.
