Tauren Wells is a Grammy-nominated Christian pop artist, who has produced very MJ-sounding music in recent years and has got us dusting off our MJ moves to match his beats and flow.

 

It is no secret that Tauren is influenced by MJ. In the YouTube video that gives insight into the making of his most recent song Fake It, he talks about MJ like beats being his love language.

 

The genesis of Fake It, really was having fun in the studio. My co-writers had this MJ Thriller type vibe already going on a track, which is my love language, said Tauren.

 

There is even a 2016 video that appears to show Tauren Wells singing MJs Billie Jean and doing the moonwalk during a game of name that tune.

 

MJs influence on his sound, vocal range and dance moves are clear as day. Whether that clarity is a result of things he himself has said, or just the common untrained ear listening to his music or the untrained eye watching is visual art.

 

You could even go as far as saying his wardrobe choices have been impacted by MJ. In the Fake It video both himself and his backup dancers are in black suits with white shirts. The only thing that might have been missing was the iconic white socks.

 

But does being inspired by, sounding like and dancing like MJ solidify the validity of thinking of Tauren as the MJ Christian reboot?  Probably so in this case.

 

Firstly, because it wouldnt be fair to compare Tauren and MJ in terms of accolades. Tauren is just starting out in terms of his accomplishments in comparison to MJ. Tauren is Grammy-nominated but MJ won multiple Grammys.

 

Secondly, Tauren Wells is a well know Christian artist. I sing about what I believe in the most, which is my faith. I cant separate my everyday experience, or my art, from what God has done in my life, Tauren said in an interview published by Great Day Houston. Taurens work largely fits in a genre of music that MJs didnt.

 

Thirdly and finally, not all of Taurens music is informed by MJ themes so it cant be said, for example, that he has made an entire career out of being MJ inspired. 

 

Tauren is very much the MJ Christian reboot and is so unapologetically. Building on the creativity of a legend in his own way and for listeners enjoyment. Nobody can be mad at that.
