Beverley Knight to portray gospel legend Sister Rosetta Tharpe in UK premiere of 'Marie and Rosetta'

Award-winning singer and actress Beverley Knight is set to take on the role of Sister Rosetta Tharpe in the UK premiere of 'Marie and Rosetta', a powerful play with music that delves into the life and faith of the woman often called the "Godmother of Rock 'n' Roll."

The production will run at the Rose Theatre in Kingston from May 2 to 24, 2025, before transferring to Chichester Festival Theatre from June 25 to July 26, 2025.

A Story of Faith, Music, and Legacy

Sister Rosetta Tharpe was not only a musical pioneer but a woman deeply rooted in the Christian faith. Raised singing in the Church of God in Christ, she used her extraordinary talent to bridge the worlds of gospel and secular music, influencing rock icons such as Elvis Presley and Little Richard. 'Marie and Rosetta' captures this spirit, focusing on her partnership with gospel singer Marie Knight and their shared devotion to their music and faith.

The play, set during rehearsals for one of their tours in the 1940s, features iconic gospel songs such as 'Didn’t It Rain' and 'Peace in the Valley', which reflect Tharpe’s unwavering spiritual foundation.

Beverley Knight: A Voice of Faith

Beverley Knight, one of the UK’s most celebrated soul singers, has often spoken about the importance of faith in her life. Born to a Jamaican Pentecostal family, she was raised singing in church, much like Rosetta Tharpe.

Knight’s casting adds a personal resonance to the role, as her own career has been shaped by the same gospel roots that defined Tharpe’s legacy. Having won an Olivier Award for 'Sylvia' and earned critical acclaim for 'Memphis' and 'The Drifters Girl', Knight’s transition into this faith-driven role is a natural and powerful evolution.

Tickets for the Rose Theatre run are available from January 20, 2025, and for Chichester Festival Theatre from March 1, 2025.
